Burgundy,
bottle by bottle

A great collection is built through individual choices: a favourite vineyard, a vintage worth following, a bottle set aside for the right company. Our online "wine o’clock" auction #127 brings that pleasure into focus, with 37 lots led by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, alongside François Raveneau, selected Bordeaux wines and a remarkable historic Cognac.

At the heart of the auction, the Domaine De La Romanée-Conti’s 2012 and 2013 assortments, now offered separately, provide an opportunity to explore Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands-Échézeaux, Échézeaux and Corton. Romanée-Conti also appears in five successive vintages, from 2015 to 2019, while magnums of La Tâche and Richebourg 2017 add another dimension to the selection. Together, these wines invite collectors to follow both individual vineyards and the changing expression of each year.

Provenance adds to their appeal. Acquired directly from a European importer of the Domaine and carefully preserved, the DRC wines display very good appearances and levels. Several groups of La Tâche and Richebourg retain consecutive bottle numbers, a detail collectors will appreciate. The three bottles of La Tâche 2012 in lot 11 are one such example.

Many wines are offered by the single bottle, giving bidders the freedom to choose precisely what they would like to cellar or share. A bottle of Romanée-Conti 2012 or Échézeaux 2012 might fill a gap in a collection, mark an occasion or become the centrepiece of a memorable dinner. There is a particular pleasure in selecting a great wine with its eventual opening in mind.

Bordeaux brings a smaller but compelling selection

Le Pin 2019 in an original wooden case of three magnums, individual magnums of the 2021 vintage, and Petrus 2021. Six vintages of Château d’Yquem, spanning 1913 to 1962, offer a further perspective on collecting across generations.

The final lot: 1811, an heir, a comet and a Cognac

The auction closes with a bottle whose vintage holds particular resonance for admirers of Napoleonic history: Cognac Vieille Fine Champagne “Réserve de l’Empereur” 1811.

On 20 March 1811, Marie-Louise of Austria gave birth to Napoleon’s son, immediately styled King of Rome and later known as Napoleon II. The Emperor finally had the dynastic heir he had long awaited. Just five days later, on 25 March, the French astronomer Honoré Flaugergues discovered the great comet that would become inseparable from the reputation of that year’s harvest. A few months afterwards, the grapes associated with this Cognac’s catalogued vintage were gathered in Charente.

For a collector, these events give 1811 an unusually tangible significance. This was the year before the Russian campaign of 1812, which would transform Napoleon’s fortunes. The vintage belongs to a moment when the birth of a son appeared to secure the dynasty’s future, before the reversals that would bring the Empire to an end.

The bottle itself carries a distinctive reminder of that history: a glass medallion bearing the imperial “N”. Together with the designation “Réserve de l’Empereur”, it gives the final lot a particular appeal for collectors interested in the Napoleonic era. These features evoke an imperial association, although the available provenance does not establish that the bottle belonged to Napoleon or came from his personal cellars.

Its attraction is already considerable: a Cognac catalogued from the celebrated Comet Vintage, predating the phylloxera crisis and recalling a Charentais vineyard very different from today’s. For the spirits enthusiast and the admirer of Napoleon alike, it offers a compelling connection to the year of an imperial heir and an extraordinary harvest.

A sense of time…

Some wine collections are built around a celebrated estate, a prestigious appellation or a sequence of great vintages. Others reveal something more elusive: a sense of time.

Our “wine o’clock” #125 belongs firmly to the latter category. Bringing together 149 lots from Burgundy and Bordeaux, the sale spans more than half a century, from 1916 to 1970. Rather than presenting a simple succession of rare bottles, the catalogue invites collectors on a chronological journey through two of France’s greatest wine regions.

It begins in Burgundy with a remarkable collection from Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé before turning towards Bordeaux and a succession of legendary châteaux. Together, these wines form a panorama of the twentieth century: celebrated harvests and less familiar vintages, changing styles and enduring terroirs.

Each bottle has travelled through decades of history. Its label, capsule and level bear witness to a journey that can never be reproduced.

Burgundy—the singular voice of Comte Georges de Vogüé

The opening chapter is devoted entirely to Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé, represented by 19 lots. Few estates embody the historical depth and quiet authority of Chambolle-Musigny with such distinction.

The domaine is inseparable from the identity of the village and from some of its most revered vineyards. Musigny is renowned for its refinement, complexity and extraordinary persistence, while Bonnes-Mares generally offers a broader and more structured expression, without losing the finesse associated with Chambolle-Musigny.

Older Burgundy is exceptionally scarce. The region has always been defined by small parcels, limited production and highly fragmented ownership. As the decades pass, bottles are opened, disappear into private cellars or are lost through imperfect storage. The surviving examples become increasingly precious.

Among the highlights, Musigny Vieilles Vignes 1961 immediately commands attention. While 1961 is remembered as one of the twentieth century’s great European vintages, mature Burgundy from this year is now encountered far less frequently than its Bordeaux counterpart. After more than six decades of evolution, such a bottle offers the possibility of discovering the complex language of mature Pinot Noir.

Musigny Vieilles Vignes 1969 provides another important landmark. Highly regarded in Burgundy, the vintage produced wines combining freshness, structure and aromatic precision. The best examples continue to show a remarkable balance between delicacy and persistence.

Bonnes-Mares 1966 introduces a contrasting facet of the domaine. More muscular and reserved in its youth, Bonnes-Mares can acquire remarkable depth and harmony after decades in bottle.

Together, these wines invite comparison between vineyard, vintage and evolution within a single great domaine. Placed side by side, they form a dialogue between Musigny and Bonnes-Mares, between different years and between the wine originally created and the wine it has become.

A journey through Bordeaux

The second chapter turns towards Bordeaux, with names that have shaped the international history of fine wine: Château Mouton Rothschild, Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Latour, Château Margaux, Château Haut-Brion, Château La Mission Haut-Brion, Château d’Yquem, Château Ausone and Petrus.

The journey begins with Château Mouton Rothschild 1916. Produced during the First World War, this bottle belongs to a world profoundly different from our own. Its survival is exceptional, not only because of its age, but because it has endured more than a century of historical and social change.

A bottle from 1916 should not be approached solely through conventional expectations of performance. It is an artefact of wine history: fragile, moving and extraordinarily rare.

Mouton Rothschild appears again in 1928, notably in a lot of six bottles. Whereas many early twentieth-century wines now emerge as solitary examples, a group of six presents collectors with a rare opportunity to experience natural bottle variation, preserve part of the lot or share it across several occasions.

The 1928 vintage remains one of the great references of the interwar period, remembered for wines of formidable structure and longevity.

From the 1930s to the post-war renaissance

The chronological structure of the catalogue also encourages collectors to reconsider less obvious periods. Wine history is often reduced to a short list of universally acclaimed vintages, but an old wine can never be understood through a vintage chart alone. Producer, terroir, storage and the individuality of each bottle remain decisive.

The year 1934 is represented by several important estates, including Château Haut-Brion and Château d’Yquem.

Haut-Brion holds a unique position among the First Growths. Its wines are distinguished by their aromatic complexity, characteristic smoky nuances and ability to acquire extraordinary depth with age. The Haut-Brion 1934 is offered in several configurations, allowing collectors to choose between a single historical bottle or a group of bottles from the same vintage.

Château d’Yquem 1934 brings an entirely different rhythm to the collection. Great Sauternes evolves according to its own timescale. Concentration, acidity and noble rot can allow Yquem to develop over extraordinary periods, gradually revealing notes of beeswax, dried citrus, saffron and spice.

The 1950s then mark a period of renewal for Bordeaux. Château La Mission Haut-Brion 1955 is among the sale’s compelling post-war highlights. Long admired by knowledgeable collectors, La Mission has repeatedly produced wines capable of standing alongside the most celebrated classified growths.

The 1955 vintage is valued for its harmony and balance rather than sheer power—qualities that have allowed its finest wines to evolve gracefully.

Château Mouton Rothschild 1959 offers a richer and more opulent expression of Bordeaux. For many collectors, mature wines from the 1950s occupy an ideal intersection: sufficiently evolved to display the transformation brought by bottle ageing, yet still capable, in the finest examples, of remarkable presence and vitality.

The 1960s and the final landmark

The 1960s bring the Burgundy and Bordeaux narratives into closer conversation. It is the decade of Musigny Vieilles Vignes 1961 and 1969, Bonnes-Mares 1966 and several significant Bordeaux bottlings.

Mouton Rothschild 1962 is offered in both bottles and magnums. Large formats have always held a special place in wine culture, not merely for their visual grandeur but also for their slower evolution. The lower proportion of oxygen to wine can enable a magnum to retain a distinctive balance between maturity and freshness.

The vintage itself has often lived in the shadow of the monumental 1961. Yet this forms part of its appeal. The best 1962s can display classical proportions, elegance and freshness without the premium attached to one of the century’s most famous harvests.

The journey concludes in 1970 with Petrus, bringing the catalogue to Pomerol and one of the world’s most coveted wines. Petrus derives its identity not from an imposing château or a traditional classification, but from its distinctive clay soils and its profound expression of Merlot.

As the final chronological point of the sale, Petrus 1970 provides a fitting conclusion to a narrative that begins with Mouton Rothschild during the First World War and travels across 54 years of wine history.

Collecting time

The significance of “wine o’clock” N°125 lies not only in the rarity of its individual bottles, but also in the relationships between them.

A Burgundy collector may explore the different expressions of Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé. A Bordeaux enthusiast may follow Mouton Rothschild across several decades. Others may compare Haut-Brion and La Mission Haut-Brion, or contrast mature red Bordeaux with the extraordinary longevity of Château d’Yquem.

There is also an inevitable sense of urgency. Vineyards can produce another vintage, but they cannot recreate 1916, 1928, 1934, 1955, 1961 or 1969. Every bottle opened reduces the number remaining, making each well-preserved example that returns to the market an event in itself.

From the finesse of Musigny Vieilles Vignes to the authority of Bonnes-Mares; from Mouton Rothschild 1916 to mature Yquem, La Mission Haut-Brion and Petrus 1970, this catalogue presents wine as a living archive.

To collect these bottles is not simply to possess them. It is to preserve, interpret and eventually share them—to recognise that the most precious element in an old bottle may not be its reputation or rarity, but the time it contains.

The Highball

Refreshing, crisp, and extremely elegant.

To make it, you’ll need: 
- 50 ml whisky 
- 150 ml sparkling water (some prefer a sweeter version with chilled soda) 
- A twist of lemon for garnish 
- Use a tumbler or long drink glass .

The Boulevardier

- A small orange twist to scent the rim, left casually in the glass . Use a whisky glass.

The day has faded, dinner is over—why not end the evening with an Old Fashioned? You think it’s out of season? Not at all! Did you know that in Louisville, Kentucky, they even celebrate an Old Fashioned Day in June? That was more than enough to convince us. 

You’ll need:
- 5 cl bourbon (or rye whiskey) 
- 2–3 dashes of Angostura bitters
 - 1 sugar cube
- A whisky glass—perhaps the same as before…!

What should you bid on?
Lot 74: Domaines Des Hautes Glaces “Ceros” Single Rye – Organic Whisky 

Why?
Its characteristic rye notes, enhanced by aging in Jura Vin Jaune casks, bring beautifully suited aromas of candied and dried fruits.

The Manhattan

It makes you want to toast to sunny days—and maybe even pick up smoking again. 

You’ll need: 
- 4 cl whisky 
- 2 cl sweet (red) vermouth 
- 1 dash of Angostura bitters 
- A maraschino cherry (essential) 
- A cocktail glass or a more rounded Nick & Nora glass 

What should you bid on? 
Lot 89: Assortment of The Dalmore, Port Charlotte, Ardbeg, Longrow & Glenmorangie Whiskies .

Why?
This selection is highly appealing, featuring The Dalmore Cigar Malt Reserve—aged in American white oak ex-bourbon casks, Cabernet Sauvignon barriques, and Matusalem Oloroso sherry casks—bringing notes of cinnamon, red fruits, and vanilla, ideal for imagining a silky Manhattan that pairs perfectly with after-dinner cigars. 
Alternatively, the “Tale of Forest” offers a more botanical take, with whisky distilled using forest herbs—for a bolder reinterpretation.

This will be followed by remarkable selections from both the Southern and Northern Rhône. The “wine o’clock” 115 catalogue is brimming with gems. Some are safe bets, others treasures for lovers of rare and iconic wines. Lots designed for smart bidding, where a single purchase can fill your wine cellar.

With Valentine’s Day approaching, we envisioned a dinner capable of charming your +1, your partner, or your future other half! We could have taken the playful route: winking at cuvée names. A Grande Dame (Lot 16), a Charmes-Chambertin from Perrot-Minot (Lot 151), or even Les Valentines (Lot 264). Even a Laurent-Perrier Grand Siècle (Lot 5) evokes the passing years in a union. Fun, of course, but after the first smile, the effect can quickly grow repetitive.

Le catalogue de la “wine o’clock” 115 regorge de pépites. Certaines sont des valeurs sûres, d’autres des trésors pour les amateurs de raretés et de vins iconiques. Des lots pensés pour enchérir intelligemment, où une seule mise peut remplir votre eurocave.

À l’approche de la Saint-Valentin, nous avons imaginé un dîner capable de séduire votre +1, votre moitié, ou votre moitié en devenir ! On aurait pu choisir l’option ludique : les clins d’œil de noms de cuvées. Une Grande Dame (Lot 16), un Charmes-Chambertin de Perrot-Minot (Lot 151) ou encore Les Valentines (Lot 264). Même un Laurent-Perrier Grand Siècle (Lot 5) évoque les années qui s’additionnent dans une union. Amusant, certes, mais après le premier sourire, l’effet peut vite devenir redondant.

This option remains a safe choice: the selected winemakers win the approval of the most discerning enthusiasts every year. Imagine opening the evening with a Clos de la Néore by Edmond and Anne Vatan (Lots 31–35). A Sauvignon Blanc, but far from conventional. Its aromas go beyond the varietal: fine herbs balanced by subtle fennel, yellow fruits, candied lemon, roasted pineapple—or perhaps passion fruit. Pair it with a ceviche prepared with just a touch of passion, and you create a subtle echo with the wine while reinforcing the evening’s theme…

Alors, mieux vaut sortir le grand jeu, façon wine geek, pour créer la surprise et l’émerveillement. L’option n’en demeure pas moins sûre : les vignerons sélectionnés remportent chaque année l’adhésion des amateurs les plus exigeants. Imaginez l’ouverture du bal avec un Clos de la Néore d’Edmond et Anne Vatan (Lots 31 à 35). Un Sauvignon blanc, mais loin d’être conventionnel. Ses arômes dépassent le variétal: herbes fines balancées par un fenouil subtil. Des notes de fruits jaunes également citron confit, ananas rôti : ou plutôt fruit de la passion. Associez-le à un ceviche travaillé avec un peu de passion justement, vous créez ainsi un écho subtil au vin, tout en affirmant la thématique de la soirée…

The rest of the meal should remain coherent. Lièvre à la Royale, however sublime, might feel slightly off. To maintain a sense of controlled tension and the unusual, why not choose a Savagnin, François Rousset-Martin’s Oxy-More (Lot 38)? Its toasted, nutty notes pair beautifully with a ravioli, a rich jus, or a reduced sauce, offering roundness without losing elegance.

La suite du repas doit rester cohérente. Le Lièvre à la Royale, aussi sublime soit-il, sonnerait un peu faux. Pour rester sur une tension maîtrisée et l’insolite, pourquoi ne pas choisir un Savagnin, l’Oxy-More de François Rousset-Martin (Lot 38) ? Ses notes de noisette et toastées se marient avec une raviole, un jus corsé ou une sauce réduite, offrant rondeur et gourmandise sans perdre l’élégance.

If you prefer a safe bet, nothing beats a refined roasted pigeon served with a Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes from Domaine Ponsot (Lot 57). Elegant Pinot, sensual texture, and tangy cherry notes: a pairing that always works and stays on theme. For those seeking a slightly more robust red yet practical option, duck remains an elegant all-rounder. Without jumping straight to a “Canard au Sang” à la Escoffier, (which one of you have a poultry press anyway?) a lightly seared magret with a gentle balsamic reduction would match ripe black fruits, subtle tobacco notes, and the soft spices of the Montebello Ridge (Lot 297).

Si l’on préfère la sûreté, rien ne vaut un plat racé : un pigeon rôti servi avec un Chambolle-Musigny « Les Charmes » du Domaine Ponsot (Lot 57). Pinots élégants, texture sensuelle et notes de cerise mordante : un accord qui fonctionne à coup sûr et toujours dans le thème. Pour ceux qui souhaitent un vin rouge à peine plus dense mais pratique, le canard reste un passe-partout élégant. Sans parler tout de suite d’un canard au sang façon Escoffier (qui possède une presse à volaille dans sa cuisine ?), un magret un peu grillé travaillé avec une réduction légère balsamique, s’accorderait aux fruits noirs mûrs, aux notes subtiles de tabac et aux épices douces du Montebello Ridge (Lot 297).

And to finish the evening with flair, nothing beats the Sine Qua Non Mr. K Vin de Paille (Lot 293). Passerillé Sémillon with a syrupy texture, yet kept lively by still-present acidity, finishing on dates, maple syrup, and malty notes. A simple dessert would suffice: a baked apple, candied and caramelized, finished in the wood fire to impart a whisper of smoky notes. Indulgent? Absolutely—but ending the evening by the fireplace would certainly earn extra points.

A word to the wise…

Et pour conclure la soirée avec panache, rien de mieux que le Sine Qua Non, Mr. K Vin de Paille (Lot 293). Sémillon passerillé à la texture sirupeuse mais soutenue par une acidité encore présente, finale sur dattes, sirop d’érable et notes maltées. Un dessert simple suffirait : une pomme au four confite et caramélisée, toute simple mais dont on aurait terminée la cuisson dans le feu de bois pour y apporter des notes à peine boisées. Là on délire totalement mais finir la soirée au coin d’une cheminée vous marqueriez encore des points.

Chers amis, chers amateurs,

Au nom de Baghera/wines, nous souhaitons exprimer notre profonde tristesse à l’annonce du décès d’Emmanuel Reynaud.

Tout au long de la semaine, les réseaux sociaux se sont emplis de photographies de ses vins, autant de petits hommages personnels, sincères et silencieux.

L’abondance de ces témoignages nous a fait ressentir à quel point cette communauté du vin était belle, vivante et combien l’œuvre d’un vigneron peut toucher, inspirer et fédérer. Au fil de ces partages, au gré des souvenirs de dégustation ravivés, nous l’avons réalisé: nous lui devions tous beaucoup.

De manière tout à fait fortuite, nous avions programmé — bien avant cette triste nouvelle — une vente rassemblant un nombre significatif de lots de Château Rayas, Pignan et Fonsalette.

Fallait-il, ou non, communiquer à leur sujet ? La vente était prête, et s’annonçait exceptionnelle… Nous avons longuement réfléchi à la manière de l’aborder, avec la pudeur et la dignité qui s’imposent.

Nous avons choisi de vous présenter ces lots avec le respect dû à l’œuvre d’un vigneron qui rejoint aujourd’hui le panthéon des grands noms ayant marqué de leur empreinte l’histoire de notre profession. Nous veillerons à ce que cette mise en avant se fasse dans la sobriété, la retenue et l’hommage qui lui reviennent.

C’est dans cet esprit que nous avons décidé de maintenir cette vente, en souhaitant qu’elle puisse devenir, pour chacun, l’occasion de célébrer non seulement de grands vins, mais aussi la mémoire d’un homme dont l’héritage continuera longtemps d’inspirer d’émouvoir amateurs, professionnels et générations futures.

Throughout the week, social media has been filled with photographs of his wines, each a small, personal, sincere, and silent tribute.

The abundance of these testimonials made us feel how beautiful and vibrant this wine community is, and how much the work of a winemaker can touch, inspire, and unite. As we shared these messages and rediscovered tasting memories, we realized how much we all owed him.

Quite by chance, we had scheduled – well before this sad news – a sale bringing together a significant number of lots from Château Rayas, Pignan and Fonsalette.

Should we have communicated about them, or not? The sale was ready, and promised to be exceptional… We carefully considered how to approach it, with the appropriate discretion and dignity.

We have chosen to present these lots to you with the respect due to the work of a winemaker who today joins the pantheon of great names who have left their mark on the history of our profession. We will ensure that this highlighting is done with the sobriety, restraint and tribute that is due to him.

It is in this spirit that we have decided to proceed with this sale, hoping that it will become, for everyone, an opportunity to celebrate not only great wines, but also the memory of a man whose legacy will continue to inspire and move enthusiasts, professionals, and future generations for a long time to come.

The auction marathon continues on October 29th with wines from the legendary R. López de Heredia estate, known today as Viña Tondonia. This 107-lot sale features remarkable levels and color for their age: Viña Tondonia Blanco, as well as Tondonia and Bosconia Gran Reserva from the 1920s to the 1970s, Viña Bosconia, and the ultra-rare lightly sweet wines of Viña Zaconia, whose production ended in the late 1960s — plus a few extraordinarily rare rosés, now around 50 years old.
