Founded in 1864 by Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, Vega Sicilia is one of Spain's most iconic wineries. Trained in Bordeaux, Lecanda introduced French grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Malbec to the Ribera del Duero region, alongside local Tempranillo. His ambition: to produce wines that rival the finest European vintages.
In the following decades, the estate passed through various hands, but it was under the leadership of Antonio Herrero, at the beginning of the 20th century, that Vega Sicilia acquired its legendary reputation with the creation of Unico, an exceptional blended wine, aged for many years in barrels and bottles, initially intended for an elite clientele and offered as a privilege rather than a bargain.
In 1982, a new era began with the acquisition of the estate by the Álvarez family, who modernized the facilities while preserving traditional methods. Under their leadership, Vega Sicilia developed and gave birth to other renowned vintages such as Valbuena 5º Año, Alión in Ribera del Duero, Pintia in the Toro appellation, and Macán in Rioja, in partnership with the Rothschild family.
The group also acquired an estate in Tokaj, Hungary, thus affirming its international vocation. Today, Vega Sicilia embodies Spanish winemaking excellence, combining tradition, innovation, and rigor, and its wines are among the most sought-after and rarest in the world.
