Une vente aux enchères dynamique dédiée aux grands vins et spiritueux du monde

Nos “wine o’clocks” sont des ventes aux enchères rythmées et passionnantes, offrant une sélection variée de vins et spiritueux issus des plus grands terroirs. Port Ellen “Special Release” 15-bottle collection

A legend of the whisky world, the Port Ellen distillery opened in 1824 and produced incredible peaty nectars until it tragically ceased production in 1983. Today, Port Ellen’s  name is coupled with highly-prized beverages of the word. Available stocks are dwindling¦ and prices rising, for two straightforward reasons: its scarcity and the unforgettable delicacy of its peaty aromas.

This 15-bottle collection includes the 15th first Port Ellen annual expressions sold by distillery owner Diageo as part of its Special Releases series, all distilled in 1978 or 1979. These bottles from the annual releases programme rarely come to auction. Thus, being able to purchase 15 releases is very unusual, and it should captivate interest from worldwide collectors.

White Bowmore 1964, 43yo

Nested alongside the breathtaking shore of Loch Indaal (Islay), the distillery was established in 1779 and still produces some of the finest single malt Scotch whiskies.

The iconic White Bowmore is the second of the limited trilogy edition, the first being the Black and the third the Gold. Distilled in November 1964 and bottled more than 43 years later in 2008 (only 732 bottles), this 43-year-old single malt matured in bourbon barrels, is a luscious and youthful nectar, offering redolences of tropical fruit, honey, and vanilla.

Karuizawa 1981, 33 yo

Opened in 1955 in Miyota, Japan, the Karuizawa distillery housed 4 small stills and imported barley from Scotland to create their whisky, which was then often aged in Sherry casks. In the 1970s its whisky became destined for both single malt as well as blends. In the late 1980s and 1990s, Karuizawa appeared as a single malt, and it began to pick up a reputation in Japan, although very little left the country.

Unfortunately, the whisky market was not as buoyant in Japan as today, and despite its popularity, in 2001 Karuizawa closed, the UK company Number One Drinks purchasing the remaining whisky stocks.

This 33yo old Karuizawa takes us on an oriental journey, from tea spices, caramel, oranges and citrus fragrances, to endearing camphor and kumquat aromas, ending on a lingering spicy and balanced finish like no other. Mythical!

Lagavulin 1976, 30 yo

Situated in a small bay near the south coast of Islay near the ruins of Dunyveg Castle, Lagavulin distillery is thought to be one of the longest established distilleries in the country. Peated malt, slow distillation and long maturation together ensure Lagavulin develops a complex, rich, peaty character recognized world-wide as one of the finest distilleries on Islay Island.

This highly sought-after bottle of Lagavulin, the oldest official release until the 37 year old from the same vintage came along  was distilled in 1976 and released within Diageo's Super Premium selection back in 2006. It caused a storm when it came out. A must-have on every serious whisky collector’s wish list !

Brora 1977, 24 yo

Originally known as Clynelish, the sadly long lost Brora distillery became a victim of its own success when a new distillery was built alongside to increase capacity on the eve of the downturn of the late 70s/early 80s. The new distillery took over the name, the old distillery was renamed and, business moving at idle speed, it ceased activity in 1983.

This rare collectable bottle from the silent distillery Brora is a limited edition: The Rare Malts are a series of Diageo cask-strength releases, designed to show off some of the lesser-known whiskies in its empire. This 24 years old single malt whisky was distilled in 1977 and bottled at natural cask strength in October 2001. A huge and powerful malt with savorous, waxy and coastal notes with a meaty intensity. Another must-have!

The Port Ellen distillery needs no introduction to whisky collectors! Nevertheless, here goes… Port Ellen opened in 1824, later than its neighbours on Islay’s south coast. It was built by Alexander Mackay, and in 1836 the lease of the distillery was taken by John Ramsay, a member of a distillers family based in Clackmannanshire.

The distillery remained in the Ramsay family’s hands until 1920 when it was sold to the newly formed Port Ellen Distillery Co. In 1925, ownership of Port Ellen passed into the hands of the industry giant DCL. It closed in 1930 and remained silent until 1967. Production buildings were then re-built by DCL and the distillery operated from 1967 to 1983 when it was closed again during the whisky rationalisation of the 80’s. As DCL already had two other distilleries (Caol Ila and Lagavulin), Port Ellen was tragically thought to be surplus to demand.

Port Ellen had a fairly modest production capacity (around 1.2 million liters per year). The water used in production was drawn from the Leorin Lochs on Islay. Due to the enormous volume of peat on the island, the water in Leorin Lochs was (and still is…) running brown. The production at Port Ellen had a couple of unique facets, the most noticeable of which was that the distillery’s pot stills were heated by mechanical coal stokers, which then switched to steam heated coil. The presence of peat in the water helps contribute to the unique flavour of the Islay whiskies.

Today, Port Ellen has joined its name to the highly-prized beverages of the word. Available stocks (owned by Diageo) are dwindling… and prices rising, for two straightforward reasons: its scarcity and the unforgettable delicacy of its peaty aromas.

The leftover nectars of this deified distillery have significant pleasures to provide to those lucky enough to grasp one of these rare bottles.

William Grant & Sons, a spirited family

William Grant & Sons is one of the last companies still to be held by the family who founded it (in 1887) and one of the twenty distilleries established in the 19th century still to be operative today.

It probably is the first distillery to have released an official bottling for single malt, in 1963. A total success and the beginning of an amazing breakthrough strongly supported by efficient marketing.

Today, William Grant & Sons count six distilleries including Glenfiddich and the Balvenie of which we are pleased to offer 4 magnificent masterpieces.

Note that the now silent distillery of Ladyburn was part of the company.

Glenfiddich, best dram in the valley

Historically, the first of the Grant Family distilleries, it surely is one of the best known brands of single malt whisky.

Easily recognizable by its triangular bottle that was designed in 1957 to distinguish it from other whisky bottles and with a production capacity of more than 10,000,000 litres it could easily be seen as a simple whisky factory. It will be without acknowledging more than 130 years of savoir-faire!

The Balvenie, pure gold…

Built in 1892 nearby the Glenfiddich distillery by Grant; it produces delectable whiskies quite different from it’s elders.

Since 1973 and its first official bottling, The Balvenie has resolutely guarded its brand and thus, independant bottlings are almost nonexistent. Making each bottle of Balvenie the purest expression of its makers wish.

Ladyburn, a wee bit of a Scottish ghost

Originally added to a complex located in Girvan and destined to produce whisky for the Grant’s blend, this distillery has been active for only nine years (1966-1975) and may have had the shortest duration in Scot distilleries’ history!

Per chance, a few single malt whiskies have been bottled and their known quality, added to their rarity, really make them worth the chase.

Seriously? Who needs to be introduced?

Well, I won’t bother you with dry considerations such as the production capacity of 8,000,000 litres, making it the 2nd or 3rd production capacity in Scotland (oups, I just did!).

I would prefer to say that Macallan has imposed whisky among auction records for alcohol which were almost exclusively held by wines.

I would prefer to speak of the fortunate marketing and clear-sightedness for elegance that has lead to the collaboration with Lalique, a reference in the French luxury industry for glass-making and the superb and astonishing decanters born of it.

Not convinced? Ok, go and tell James Bond that his favorite whisky is not worth a bid!

Watch out, it is almost Wine o’clock!

Lors de sa vente inaugurale du 6 décembre 2015, Baghera Wines proposait pour la première fois en vente aux enchères la collection entière des “Ishiro’s malt cards”. Retour sur un lot exceptionnel. 

Exceptionnel à quel titre?

Tout d’abord il est question ici d’un ensemble de 58 bouteilles. Chacune est désignée par l’un des 52 cartes et 2 jokers d’un set de de carte à jouer classiques plus 4 cartes rééditées (Reine de Cœur, Roi de Diamant, Valet de Trèfle et As de Pique). Il s’agit certainement de l’une des plus grande série de whisky émise par un embouteilleur.

Ensuite, il n’existerait que 3 collections complètes au monde. Mais attention: on admet aussi comme complète une collection qui ne regrouperait que les 52 cartes et 2 jokers sans les rééditions…

Enfin, il s’agit d’une collection finie. C’est l’œuvre d’Ishiro Akuto qui récupérera et mettra en bouteilles le stock de son grand-père dont la distillerie avait fait faillite. Il s’agit donc de l’ultime production d’une distillerie désormais disparue.

Et puis, cerise sur le gâteau, jamais les 58 cartes n’étaient apparues ensembles aux enchères. 

Les collectionneurs ne s’y sont tromperont pas: le lot atteindra le prix de CHF 360'000 et rejoindra la courte liste des adjudications records pour un lot de whisky.
