Baghera/wines sells 2020 most expensive wine

Sunday, December 6th saw the "Kingdoms" auction organized by Baghera/wines garner CHF 3'556'500 / USD 3'988'614 / € 3'290'473 in sales, with 100% of lots sold for an estimate of between CHF 1.8 and 3.6 million. Achieved within a particularly chaotic economic context, these results confirm the appetite of wine collectors around the world and their confidence in Baghera/wines' expertise. All the bids were collected by telephone, online (internet) or by prior purchase order.

Lot 14, the "Kingdoms" by Baghera/wines star lot and the only one of its kind in the world, consisting of a set of six large-format Methuselah (6L) bottles from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, sold to a Swiss buyer for CHF 900,000 – thus becoming the most expensive wine sold in 2020.

Lot 13, a set of six large-format Jeroboam (3L) bottles from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti sold for CHF 408,000.

The first 14 lots of the sale, all from the Enoteca Pinchiorri collection, lots 1 to 14, fetched a total of CHF 1.8 million.

Wines from the Domaines Prieuré-Roch and Bizot in particular were the subject of fierce bidding and the prices achieved by each lot show growing interest among the great enthusiasts of Côte-de-Nuits terroirs.

The Chartreuses collection attracted intense interest from buyers due to its quality and the historical character of the 120 bottles. Known as a niche product for well-informed connoisseurs, Chartreuse liqueurs become increasingly important in recent years among lovers of rare spirits, with all the lots offered in "Kingdoms" fetching more than double their conservative estimate.

At the end of the sale, Michael Ganne, Executive Director of Baghera/wines, commented: "Within the very unusual context of 2020, we are very pleased with ‘Kingdoms’, a resolutely dynamic sale, where the buyers were extremely caught up in the auction, driven by the irreproachable quality of the lots offered. Regardless of the economic context, when rare goods are on the table, passion rules, and there has been no lack of interest and participation by international bidders. During the last few months Baghera/wines has, more than ever, cultivated its ties with its customers. Dematerialized sales have been an opportunity to reconnect with customers in another type of dimension, but always in a spirit of sharing and passion for wine.”

Part of the proceeds from the sale of Lots 1 to 14 in Kingdoms by Baghera/wines (Pinchiorri collection) will be donated by the owners of Enoteca Pinchiorri to two associations, one Italian (to be specified later) and the other Les Climats du vignoble de https://www.climats-bourgogne.com/en. The Climats, terroirs of Burgundy have been added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List since July 4, 2015. World Heritage is one of the various programs led by UNESCO and encourages the protection and preservation of cultural, natural and mixed sites.

It is with a wonderful story of passion for wine that Baghera/wines proposes to close its 2020 auction season. On December 6, “Kingdoms” by Baghera/wines will be held in Geneva, an auction sale including a very special collection.

Large-format bottles from the collection of Giorgio Pinchiorri, owner with his partner Annie Féolde, of the famous three-Michelin-starred Florentine restaurant, will be auctioned.

24 jeroboams and methuselahs from the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, some of the most sought-after jewels in the world, will be presented on this occasion.

In a particular context of global economic turmoil, the “Origins” collection succeeded in inspiring wine lovers all over the world with the exceptional character of its crus and vintages.

The auction included a particularly rare and prestigious collection of 1’892 bottles of Grands Crus from Burgundy and Bordeaux, patiently assembled over a thirty year period by an eminent art and wine collector in Switzerland.

With 91% of sold lots, the sale reflects the market’s interest in rare wines, in particular the great wines of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Armand Rousseau and Bordeaux premiers grands crus classés (Château Lafite-Rothschild). The results gave pride of place to the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti wines, represented by a series of superb bottles and large formats that the vendor had acquired directly from the official importer of the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in Switzerland.

In the dining room, one could distinguish the presence of wine lovers who had travelled a considerable distance in light of the rarity and quality of the wines offered for auction. A clientele from Switzerland, Europe and Asia were gathered in the sumptuous setting of Hotel Beau-Rivage.

“It is extremely rare to find at auction a collection so perfectly and meticulously assembled, carefully documented and preserved in perfect conditions at Geneva’s FreePorts, which was fully appreciated by our clientele. We note a significant involvement of buyers via live bidding, online auctions, which produced a wonderful synergy with the gathering.

Lot 123, representing a bottle that is absolutely impossible to find on the market, aroused a great deal of interest due to its rarity, and its achieved price at CHF 216’000 represents a world record for a 1979 Romanée-Conti methuselah. This illustrates the extent to which fine and rare wines remain exceptional products on the market and are, whatever the context, ardently sought-after gems”.

As all seasoned wine-lovers know, bigger bottles are actually about quality, rather than quantity. The benefits of wines in large formats are many: they age more slowly than the standard 75cl bottle and they make wonderful wedding presents and long-lasting anniversary gifts! For these reasons, the demand for bigger wine bottles – or large formats, as the insiders call them – has grown substantially in the past few decades.

Wines come in a infinity of styles of bottles from big, full bodied to light and small. The main change in sizes and shapes for wine bottles began taking place in the 18th century. The different wine bottle shapes and sizes started taking place when one discovered the benefit of corks as sealing agents and as a consequence, the ability for the wines to age. Then it was discovered that larger bottles not only looked better, they could also change the taste of a wine. This ability to change took place because the larger bottles allowed the wine to age and develop over longer periods of time than the standard current glass bottles.

Why? Large format wine bottles tend to be more resistant to temperature fluctuations.  The larger volume of liquid in the bottle takes longer to warm or cool and is therefore more resistant to temperature changes that could potentially damage a smaller bottle of wine. The thicker glass of a large format bottle also offers better UV protection for the wine.

 Apart from their imposing appearance and presence, large format wine bottles offer many benefits, both to the wine inside and to the person enjoying them. It is precisely for these reasons that every serious wine collector should be captivated by the opportunity to enhance his wine cellar with some of these rare trophies.
