Six visages majeurs de Chablis

Dans “Prelude”, les lots 1 à 61 réunissent 182 bouteilles du Domaine Raveneau, du millésime 2022 au millésime 2004, toutes issues d’un même collectionneur privé. Rare par son ampleur, cet ensemble l’est aussi par sa cohérence : il ne juxtapose pas seulement des bouteilles recherchées, il propose une véritable lecture du domaine à travers six expressions essentielles de Chablis — Chablis Village, Butteaux, Montée de Tonnerre, Blanchot, Valmur et Les Clos.

Six Major Faces of Chablis

In “Prelude”, lots 1 to 61 bring together 182 bottles from Domaine Raveneau, spanning the 2022 to 2004 vintages, all from a single private collector. Rare in its scale, this collection is also remarkable for its coherence: it doesn’t just juxtapose sought-after bottles—it offers a true exploration of the domain through six essential expressions of Chablis: Chablis Village, Butteaux, Montée de Tonnerre, Blanchot, Valmur, and Les Clos.

Un lieu, une histoire

À Chablis, le Domaine Raveneau occupe une place à part. Fondé en 1948 par François Raveneau, le domaine s’est imposé au fil des décennies comme l’une des références absolues du vignoble. Il est aujourd’hui porté par Isabelle et Maxime Raveneau, qui exploitent et vinifient 10 hectares de vignes. Cette stature tient à une fidélité rare au lieu.

À Chablis, tout part du Chardonnay et d’un sous-sol kimméridgien, vieux d’environ 150 millions d’années, composé de marnes et de calcaires riches en petits fossiles marins. C’est ce socle géologique qui donne aux vins leur pureté, leur tension et cette expression minérale si singulière. 

A place, a history

In Chablis, Domaine Raveneau holds a unique place. Founded in 1948 by François Raveneau, the estate has established itself over the decades as one of the absolute benchmarks of the vineyard. Today, it is run by Isabelle and Maxime Raveneau, who cultivate and vinify 10 hectares of vines. This stature stems from a rare fidelity to the land.

In Chablis, everything begins with Chardonnay and a Kimmeridgian subsoil, approximately 150 million years old, composed of marl and limestone rich in small marine fossils. This geological foundation gives the wines their purity, tension, and singular mineral expression.

Le style Raveneau

La sélection proposée dans “Prelude” épouse précisément la cartographie la plus lisible du domaine. Le site officiel de Raveneau présente Chablis Village parmi ses vins d’appellation village, Butteaux et Montée de Tonnerre parmi ses premiers crus, et Les Clos, Blanchot, Valmur parmi ses grands crus. Autrement dit, la vente offre ici un parcours complet, du seuil du style Raveneau jusqu’aux sommets du domaine.

Chablis Village en est la porte d’entrée idéale. L’appellation est réputée pour son éclat, sa fraîcheur et sa netteté minérale, avec des notes de pomme verte, de citron, de pierre à fusil et de fleurs discrètes. Chez Raveneau, cette entrée en matière n’a rien de secondaire : elle donne déjà la mesure d’un style droit, précis et profondément chablisien. 

Avec Butteaux, le relief se tend. Rattaché au climat porte-drapeau Montmains, ce premier cru occupe les hauteurs du coteau, sur des sols maigres, bien drainants, marqués par les marnes kimméridgiennes, les argiles et les pierres. Le site des vins de Chablis décrit Butteaux comme un cru où la maturité du fruit s’allie à une minéralité intense, des accents de silex, de la tension et un réel potentiel de garde.

Montée de Tonnerre fait ici figure de pivot. Situé légèrement en retrait des grands crus, face à Blanchot, il bénéficie d’une exposition ouest et d’un sol de calcaire marneux kimméridgien traversé d’argiles bleues. Il est souvent décrit comme un premier cru alliant minéralité, salinité, finesse, élégance et remarquable aptitude au vieillissement, avec une complexité qui se révèle pleinement avec le temps. 

Puis viennent les grands crus, avec trois tempéraments très distincts. Valmur, en forme d’amphithéâtre, profite d’une exposition allant du sud à l’ouest, tout en conservant une part de fraîcheur grâce à une zone tournée vers le nord-ouest ; Blanchot, plus à l’est, mûrit lentement et déploie un registre plus floral, aérien et subtil ; Les Clos, le plus vaste des sept grands crus, bénéficie d’une exposition sud-ouest idéale et s’impose comme l’un des climats emblématiques de Chablis, puissant, élégant, réservé dans sa jeunesse et remarquablement frais après de longues années de garde. 

The Raveneau style

The selection presented in “Prelude” precisely follows the domain’s most readable map. The official Raveneau website lists Chablis Village among its village appellation wines, Butteaux and Montée de Tonnerre among its premier crus, and Les Clos, Blanchot, and Valmur among its grand crus. In other words, the sale offers a complete journey, from the threshold of the Raveneau style to the peaks of the domain.

Chablis Village serves as the ideal introduction. The appellation is renowned for its brightness, freshness, and mineral precision, with notes of green apple, lemon, flint, and subtle floral hints. At Raveneau, this entry point is anything but secondary—it already showcases a style that is precise, direct, and deeply Chablisien.

With Butteaux, the terrain tightens. Attached to the flagship climat of Montmains, this premier cru occupies the heights of the slope, on lean, well-drained soils marked by Kimmeridgian marl, clay, and stones. The Chablis wines website describes Butteaux as a cru where fruit maturity combines with intense minerality, flinty accents, tension, and genuine aging potential.

Montée de Tonnerre stands as a pivot here. Located just behind the grand crus, facing Blanchot, it benefits from a west-facing exposure and a Kimmeridgian marly limestone soil interspersed with blue clay. It is often described as a premier cru that blends minerality, salinity, finesse, elegance, and a remarkable aptitude for aging, with complexity that fully reveals itself over time.

Then come the grand crus, each with three distinct characters. Valmur, shaped like an amphitheater, enjoys a south-to-west exposure while retaining a touch of freshness thanks to a northwest-facing area; Blanchot, further east, matures slowly and unfolds a more floral, ethereal, and subtle register; Les Clos, the largest of the seven grand crus, benefits from an ideal southwest exposure and stands as one of Chablis’s most iconic climats—powerful, elegant, reserved in its youth, and remarkably fresh after long years of aging.

Un patrimoine

C’est précisément ce qui rend cet ensemble si séduisant dans “Prelude” : la possibilité de lire le Domaine Raveneau non pas à travers une seule bouteille iconique, mais à travers une progression. Du tranchant cristallin du Chablis Village à la tension pierreuse de Butteaux, de la noblesse structurée de Montée de Tonnerre à la profondeur de Valmur, à la grâce de Blanchot et à l’autorité de Les Clos, c’est tout un paysage de Chablis qui se déploie. 

Pour l’amateur comme pour le collectionneur, ces lots 1 à 61 ont enfin une autre force : leur cohérence de provenance. Réunis au sein d’une même cave privée, ils forment dans la vente un chapitre Raveneau à part entière — un ensemble pensé moins comme une addition de bouteilles que comme une lecture précise, sensible et patrimoniale du domaine.

J'ai eu le plaisir de déguster une petite sélection des vins soigneusement sélectionnés pour notre prochaine vente « wine o’clock » n° 103. Regardons-les de plus près ensemble !

Comte Georges de Vogüe, Musigny Blanc 1992
A rare wine, produced in small quantities, offering a unique opportunity to taste one of the final vintages before the vines were uprooted in 1994!

What we have here is a rather unusual expression of Chardonnay, with a nose combining notes of white fruits — from Williams pear to peach — accompanied by aromas reminiscent of beeswax and honey.

A sharp minerality brings an astonishing freshness for a wine of this age. The palate is complex without being cloying, with all the wine’s opulence held in check by a solid underlying structure.


Un vin rare, produit en faible quantité, offrant l’occasion de déguster un des derniers millésimes avant l’arrachage des ceps en 1994 !

On déguste ici une expression assez insolite du Chardonnay, au nez alliant des notes de fruits blancs allant de la poire William à la pêche, accompagnées par des arômes rappelant la cire d’abeille, le miel…

La minéralité tranchante vient ramener une fraîcheur déconcertante pour son âge. La bouche est complexe sans être écœurante, et toute l’opulence de ce vin est contenue par une vraie structure.

Rayas 2010
We are tasting here a wine with a clearly identifiable signature, centered around blood orange and rose petals supported by subtle spices […] Some signs of evolution are noticeable, with empyreumatic notes, dried fruits, and slightly kirsch-like red fruits.

Despite what its appearance may suggest, this is a powerful wine, with a subtle balance between delicacy and aromatic depth. The palate is intense yet unextracted. This wine will fully expressing itself through a long, lingering finish. A wine that is ready to drink.

 
On retrouve ici un vin emblématique à la patte clairement identifiable autour de l’orange sanguine, des pétales de roses soutenues par des épices légers. Quelques notes d’évolution sont perceptibles sur l’empyreumatique, les fruits secs et fruits rouges légèrement kirschés.

Il s’agit d’un vin puissant contrairement à ce que sa robe laisse deviner, dont l’équilibre subtil se situe entre délicatesse et profondeur aromatique, bouche puissante mais sans extraction, s’exprimant pleinement sur la longueur. Un vin prêt à boire.

Domaine Tempier, Bandol "Cabassaou" 2008
The nose opens with noble vegetal notes of garrigue and blackcurrant leaves, accompanied by hints of liquorice and a slight roasted aroma.

If you wait a moment, the wine continues to evolve in the glass, giving way to a sweetness brought out by black fruits such as black cherry and plum.

The palate is seductive and warm, and its finely-grained tannins make this a silky wine that still has good ageing potential.


Le nez s’ouvre sur un végétal noble, aux notes de garrigue, de feuilles de cassis, qu’accompagnent des touches plus réglissées allant jusqu’à une légère torréfaction.

Pour peu que l’on attende un instant, le vin évolue sans cesse dans le verre, pour laisser place à une douceur ramenée par des fruits noirs, comme la cerise noire, la prune… L

a bouche est séduisante et chaleureuse et ses tannins d’une grande finesse en font un vin soyeux qui possède encore un bon potentiel de garde.

“ We have a treasure: it’s the terroir. ”

 Jean-Yves Bizot has taken the reign of the family vines in 1996, with references and clear ideas as to which wines he wanted to produce and also the very personal and coherent manner required to achieve this. The domaine is very small and has somewhat grown in 2007 with the acquisition of plots in Marsannay and Chenôve , as well as a white plot in Hautes Côtes.

 Unlike many others, the domaine never sought fame through praise by wine gurus or established reviewers. Its present aknowledgement at the utmost top of Burgundy wines has thus been slower but rests on grounds that exclude any short-lived fashion frenzy. In doing so, this well-deserved fame is only the more brilliant, particularly considering that the domaine only posesses one Grand cru (Echézeaux), has a tiny production stemming from some of the lowest yields in all of Burgundy ( oten in the 8 to 15 hectolitres/hectare range), an features a personality that does not try to impress readily through means of more or less gross artifacts.

upstream choices…

Here, the use of new oak barrels (100% new for all wines) is not meant to gloss-over the wines with makeup, but is solely the consequence of upstream choices: tiny yields, soft oxidation to manage the reduction process and to avoid racking which hardens the wines and requires sulfites, which in turn robs them from some of their life, bottle filling by hand, barrel by barrel so as to not wear the wines. The very low yields allow the use of only slight extraction, thus producing elegant, refined yet concentrated wines. They also allow to reach full but not excessive phenolic maturity (ie of the fruit and skins) before the sugar levels soar. This, combined with whole grape fermentation, yields wines with only 12 or 13 degrees alcohol. In the end, all the wines possess a rather light and classic color, with a tremendous aromatic refinement, delicacy of texture and length that mimic those of the greatest historic burgundies, but with more precision and rigor in the winemaking.

The pinot noir’s most rare and noble aromatics are sought here – and achieved ! – at the polar opposite of the varietal fruity types common elsewhere: old rose variety perfumes of utmost finesse, peonies, oriental spices, blood orange and ripe red peperoni feel, the latter a signature of perfect ripeness of fruit and skins.

henri jayer, an inspiration…

These wines can only be compared along the wines of the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Leroy and the late Henri Jayer – a former neighbor an inspiration for Jean-Yves Bizot – even if they display a personality of their own.

Because of their uncompromised crafting, these wines sometimes go through difficult phases when young and shut down, only to shine a decade later or more, and their aging capacity in nothing less than prodigious. Even hot and difficult vintages like 1997 or 2003 are still fresh and magnificent today, without recourse to acidity additions, unlike those of most other producers, even the most prestigious.

What to say of the magnificent 1999 or 2001, still so young and just starting their careers, or the majestic 2005 showing breathtaking richness and just starting to display their beauty? You will not find any weak or uninteresting vintage here, as everything is done at the vineyard and in the cellar to produce exceptional wines. Vine growing is exemplary, beyond tiny yields, and if organic certification is not sought, it is very close. Soils are worked by hand to avoid hardening them and the use of chemicals, the method of sexual confusion of insects was introduced here from the beginning.

the wines

The wines are grown mostly from seemingly modest but very nicely located appellations, which are literally transcended by Jean-Yves Bizot. As a result, the wine that illustrates best the domaine could be the Vosne-Romanée les Jachées, a small plot just next to the domaine separated from the famed Romanée Saint Vivant only by a few houses. This wine is floral, exquisitely spicy with a full mouthfeel and lingering length. Many a grand cru is put to shame …

The Vosne-Romanée les Réas is located on the southernmost part of the village, next to the domaine Gros’ Clos des Réas on a magnificently south-east exposed slope. Only slightly less floral, the sweet spices and blood orange notes often sign this wine, as well as as an amplebut classy mouthfeel.

The rare Premier cru stems from vines just next to the Grands-Echézeaux, and depending on the vintage is either part of the Echézeaux cuvée, or sold in a separate cuvée. This wine boasts a tremendous spicy ethereal delicacy.

The Echézeaux stems from the lieu-dit « En Orveaux » located in the combe of the same name, just under the Musigny. This wine is dense, brimming with sap, complex, and displaying fabulous length in the mouth. Its enormous aging capacity cannot be overstated.

The Marsannay Clos du Roy signs a magnificient terroir, one that is slated to be elevated to premier cru status and which tastes much like the famous Clos Saint Jacques in Gevrey. In the right hands like those of Jean-Yves Bizot, this terroir is transcended and boasts an out of the charts stature, mouthfeel and complexity.

The Clos du Chapitre in Chenôve is a beautifully located plot – the monks were not mistaken when they called it their own – and quite simply compares to a great Chambertin.

Finally, the very rare white Bourgogne Les Violettes, located along the walls of Clos Vougeot, comes close with its ample, onctuous mouthfeel, and its honeyed richness with nothing less than a Bâtard or even a Montrachet.

Nestled in the heart of Morey-St-Denis in the Côte d'Or since 1862, Domaine Ponsot reflects the richness of the Burgundy terroirs and produces - among others - six grands crus, including the iconic Clos de la Roche.

On the occasion of Domaine Ponsot's 150th anniversary, I jointly prepared with Alexandre Abel back in March this year, a rare tasting for the 1865 by Baghera/wines club members, which was accompanied by a delicious menu concocted by Dominique Gauthier — restaurant Le Chat Botté*.

At Baghera/wines it's been our outmost pleasure to host an entertaining and thrilling winemaker dinner in the presence of serious Burgundy aficionados coming from far and wide.

Beautifully complex 100% Aligoté wine. Notes of peach and nectarine along with great acidity and lemon notes on the palate, but with just a little rounded feel in the mouth enhancing a pleasing and appetizing mouthfeel. It felt like this wine really just hit in the perfect spot and we couldn't dream of a better entrée for this sumptuous dinner! 

-Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Clos des Monts Luisants 1998
An aligoté (85%, with 15% Chardonnay) with Loire Valley accents. A side of Layon wines without sugar, fat, notes of quince, a smooth evolution. Liveliness and acidity still well present, fine grid, salinity and sweet spice. Beautiful aromatic. Quite atypical but really well constructed. An excellent wine!

-Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru 2014
Clean, pure, nicely integrated fragrances of rich and waxy lemon and almond notes. Silky and voluminous, the finish of this wine demonstrates a Corton Charlemagne still evolving with gentle nutty aromas showing up when the glass reaches room temperature. 

-Morey-Saint-Denis Cuvée des Grives 2009
Wonderful bouquet of ripe cherry flesh, spice, black raspberry and earth, really smooth and elegant mouthfeel with soft integrated tannins and good acidity  — and a medium length finish. A delicious and rewarding wine, dominantly marked by its calcareous streak and the 2009 distinctive hedonistic vintage qualities in Burgundy.

-Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée de l'Abeille 2011
Dark fruit aromas dominant on the nose. Beautifully spicy and clean, evolving towards luxurious sour plums and blood orange as the wine reaches room temperature. Medium bodied, strawberries, chalky minerality, pronounced acidity. Well composed, rather light but very elegant.

-Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Cuvée des Alouettes 2005
Pure fruit juice from rather young vines. Full-bodied, powerful but not heavy. Kept changing over the course of the bottle towards earthy, gamy notes with good acidity and moderate tannins. Quite introverted at first, this mature wine revealed to be supported by a nice ripe acidity and a good ability for a longer cellarage. A lovely Morey! 

-Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru 2007
When it comes to red Côte de Nuits, I love the 2007 vintage. It's been drinking superbly for the past 2 years and never cease to surprise me... This Griotte perfectly embodies the ethereal qualities of this vintage at its best : floral overtones, explosive red berry fruits, charming acidity, soft tannins. Tender, pulpy and ... elegant like no other. A kaloidoscopic Griotte-Chambertin that caught my heart!

-Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru 2007
From 30 years old vines on average. Bright red fruit with sous-bois and herb notes. A surprisingly dense wine on the palate. Energic, well-balanced, the tannins will most certainly benefit from additional cellarage to perform more harmoniously. Feminine ("puissant mais fin" said Alexandre), savory and aging very nicely. Let's re-taste it in 3 to 5 years ! 

-Clos de la Roche Cuvée Vieilles Vignes  2007
Mid-ruby, brick-amber edges. Earthy, animal, smokey, red fruit (pungent fresh nose of burlat cherry) with a strong chalk note mixed in. Concentration, wonderful balance and engaging spice. This Clos de la Roche 2007 is nuanced yet expressive, quite pulpy but restrained and very fine, all in harmony. Absolutely fabulous!

-Clos de la Roche Cuvée Vieilles Vignes 1998
This underrated vintage can be excellent, with deep colour and ample structure, when yields were controlled and selection was strict at harvest. Pale brick color. Very pretty mature Pinot aromatics with very bright and pure red cherry fruits, coffee notes, and light floral scents. On the palate, a moderate acidity and well integrated tannins. A very pleasantly balanced wine, drinking very nicely.

-Clos de la Roche Cuvée Vieilles Vignes 1982
Last wine of this flight. All the 11 bottles being ex-domain. Medium body and color. Supple with an appealing mix of spices, red currant, fresh pine, and damp earth. Acidity is high. Very much in its drinking window. Drank nicely but very ephemeral.

I like Domaine Ponsot wines for their fleshy character, for their volume, vintage after vintage, and because they know how to find their full identity with aging, It is when they fully bring a singular vision to the family of great Burgundy wines & terroirs.

Geneva, June 21st 2021 —  “Burgundy Fields Forever”, a wine auction held by Baghera/wines on Sunday, June 20th in Geneva, netted CHF 6'651'196 | $ 7'206'570 | € 6'073'872 with 97% of lots sold. This was the first live sale of the 2021 season for the Geneva-based auction house, confirming the health of the market and the appetite of fans of exceptional wines from around the world. Baghera/wines noted record participation, including sales orders from telephone and online bidders, demonstrating the enthusiasm that characterized the live sales room reunion.

A secret collection, owned by master winemaker Henri Jayer's eldest daughter, Lydie, captured everyone’s attention at the “Burgundy Fields Forever” sale. Lot 135 – the sale’s top lot comprising 12 bottles of Domaine Henri Jayer, Vosne-Romanée Cros-Parantoux 1999 and estimated at CHF 180'000 – 360'000 – went under the hammer at CHF 561'200 (including the buyer's premium), well above its high estimate. The second highest sale was lot 132 which went for CHF 451'400. The top ten lots in the auction netted over CHF 2.5 million.

A joyful return to the auction room at Baghera/wines

Henri Jayer is the undisputed master of passionate winemakers, internationally renowned for his know-how and expertise. His wines, along with those selected by him, are among the most coveted in the world today.

In 2018, Baghera/wines made history at its iconic “ Domaine Henri Jayer, The Heritage ” sale, raising over CHF 34.5 million, thus making it the world’s biggest wine auction ever held.

Michael Ganne, Executive Director of Baghera/wines, said: “When I think of the Jayer family, there are essentially only happy moments that come to mind: the terroir, the genius, the vision, the rigorous discipline, the perfectionism and the know-how. Today I have grasped the full measure of these values upheld by Henri Jayer. It is with immense gratitude to Lydie – for her renewed confidence in Baghera/wines, and just three years after the historic 2018 sale – and with humility, that I have had the honor of offering the last bottles selected by the maestro Henri Jayer at auction this weekend. There will be no more from this source, and we are delighted to have been not only witnesses but designated custodians of this unique treasure and this historic moment.”

The other two collections presented in the sale, one directly from Switzerland and composed of impressive verticals from several large estates; along with the second, from the private cellar of a major Burgundy wine estate, composed of great so-called "mature" vintages from the Côte de Nuits, were also greatly appreciated by the audience and online bidders, with the majority of lots achieving well over their high estimates.

Gathered under the same roof, iconic Geneva chefs Philippe Chevrier and Dominique Gauthier have created a three-star menu around Greater Burgundy’s two main grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and around Burgundy wines to be auctioned on June 20th 2021 at the Beau-Rivage Geneva.

On this spring Saturday, the Châteauvieux** Restaurant, rated 19 out of 20 by Gault & Millau, will welcome you to a six-course menu highlighting great Burgundy wines that will be served according to food and wine pairings.
The nature of the wines will not be disclosed. No list will be produced and all bottles will be hidden to enable a blind tasting, allowing you to focus on the qualities of their wines while detecting all their mysteries. The selection by the Baghera/wines team will once again be composed of the greatest bottles from this fabulous French region, especially for you, dear epicureans.

Just three years after the historic “Henri Jayer, the Heritage” on June 17th 2018, catapulting it to European wine auction leader with a total of CHF 34.5 million, Baghera/wines is offering a new event-sale underpinned by the memory of Henri Jayer. A veritable ode to Burgundy, the next Baghera/wines sale, “Burgundy Fields Forever”, will be held in Geneva on Sunday June 20th 2021.

Three remarkable collections will be brought together on this occasion: one the work of a Swiss collector; the second comprising great Burgundy vintages from the private collection of a renowned Côte d'Or estate; and the third presenting the legendary wines offered by the illustrious winemaker to his eldest daughter, Lydie Jayer.

Among this journey in three acts through the heart of the Burgundy Climats, here is a list of a few gems which deserve a closer look:

“Let me take you down, ‘cause I am going to Burgundy fields forever…”

… The sound of an image, travelling through perceptions and smells that you can touch with your eyes... “and nothing to get hung up about”!

This catalogue naturally cannot encompass all the viticultural pleasures of Burgundy’s climats, but it is a journey that we suggest, the path of a dreamer through these ancestral plots... The three sections composing this catalogue are an ode to the Burgundy we love, to the respect we have for the winegrowers who work tirelessly so that this alchemy of the land and the vine can enchant our taste buds.

The first part of this catalogue from a Swiss cellar will introduce you to the pleasures of some famous Domaines with great verticals that will give you a better understanding of each climat according to its vintages. One easily recognizes the touch of a Burgundy enthusiast who wishes to share his love of the Côte de Nuits regions exploring the history of each of these parcels. This perfectly preserved cellar is a wonderful demonstration of his passion.

The second part offers an introduction to the pleasures of the great mature Burgundy vintages, some of which can no longer be found nowadays. These jewels from the private cellar of a great Burgundy domaine, comfortably installed in an old natural cellar in a somewhat damp, cool basement hadn’t left their terroir in decades. What a pleasure to chat to the owner of these veritable nectars, preserved by his ancestors, and tasted among family members. These are the stories that only wine growers can tell us... so far from and yet so close to present-day reality.

“ I feel sorry for people who don’t drink. When they wake up in the morning, that’s as good as they’re going to feel all day.”

The final chapter brings this catalogue to a close in a blend of simplicity and grandeur, with Henri Jayer’s legendary wines from his daughter Lydie’s private cellar. Henri Jayer himself chose and offered each of these bottles as gifts, or simply and quite humbly brought them to Lydie’s home, 20 minutes from Vosne-Romanée, for Sunday lunches with the family. As a fun nod to those well acquainted with Henri Jayer’s labels, although they came from Henri’s daughter’s private cellar, all of these bottles have benefited from new labels and capsules used in 2018 at our historic auction.

The highlight of the sale will surely be this Richebourg 1959, a wine that Henri Jayer hoped to open for the christening of his grandson Sébastien in 1971. He changed his mind because, to his taste, the wine wasn’t ready. The same thing happened at Sébastien’s wedding. Deemed too young, the wine would be kept for a subsequent occasion and in the end, a bottle was drunk at a Christmas family celebration. The ultimate bottle of Richebourg 1959 was kept in a corner… and you are fortunate enough to see it appear here, as the very last lot in this catalogue. Might it still be too young?!

It will in any case constitute a timeless memory for a legendary bottle that you will be able to taste while thanking Henri for having been so patient... and all while admiring these “Burgundy fields”... forever!
