“Burgundy fields forever” — room auction by Bagherawines, june 20, 2021

By Michael Ganne

Michael Ganne is originally from the Médoc region of Bordeaux and naturally chose to dedicate himself to the wine business. Yet his unswerving taste for novelty spans beyond the great Bordeaux wines…

An ode to Burgundy, notably celebrating Henri Jayer’s eldest daughter’s Private Collection

GENEVA, MAY 6th, 2021

Just three years after the historic “Henri Jayer, the Heritage” on June 17th 2018, catapulting it to European wine auction leader with a total of CHF 34.5 million, Baghera/wines is offering a new event-sale underpinned by the memory of Henri Jayer. A veritable ode to Burgundy, the next Baghera/wines sale, “Burgundy Fields Forever, will be held in Geneva on Sunday June 20th 2021.

Three remarkable collections will be brought together on this occasion: one the work of a Swiss collector; the second comprising great Burgundy vintages from the private collection of a renowned Côte d'Or estate; and the third presenting the legendary wines offered by the illustrious winemaker to his eldest daughter, Lydie Jayer.

Once again celebrating the beautiful Burgundy wine region, this Baghera/wines sale proposes a journey in three acts through the heart of the Burgundy Climats.

A journey to the heart of Burgundy

— act 1 —

The private collection of a Swiss passionate

Skillfully put together by a seasoned collector, the first collection, coming directly from Switzerland, is composed of impressive verticals spreading over several large estates. This passionate Swiss has mainly been captivated by the Côte de Nuits vineyards and has determinedly built up his collection in line with his personal – unquestionably impeccable – tastes. The collection demonstrates an admirable knowledge of Burgundian Climats, and has also been preserved with care and rigorous discipline, resulting in a perfect state of conservation – a crucial factor for Baghera/wines.

The private cellar of a great Burgundian estate

The second collection, from the private cellar of a great Burgundy wine estate, presents great Côte de Nuits vintages regarded as "mature", most of which are considered unobtainable. This is a cellar in the traditional sense of the term that has both cherished and preserved these gems from the effects of time. In the purest tradition of winemakers' discoveries, these bottles have been handed down from generation to generation, with all the usual recommendations and all the winemakers’ know-how, whether it is a question of conservation, storage and very necessary, tasting.

Henri Jayer’s eldest daughter's private collection

June 17th, 2018. Baghera/wines made wine auction history with its “Henri Jayer, the Heritage” sale, totaling more than CHF 34.5 million and making it the largest wine auction in absolute terms to this day.

Baghera/wines is keeping it in the family with this uttermost collection in the “Burgundy Fields Foreversale on June 20th 2021. Curated by the illustrious winemaker Henri Jayer's eldest daughter, this collection is the work of the maestro himself, who carefully selected these nectars for his daughter and grandson. This journey through the vintages chosen by this virtuoso, his consummate expertise with regards to terroirs as prestigious as Richebourg or Echézeaux leading to the creation of the fabled Cros-Parantoux, are all evident in these bottles which demonstrate his incredible flair and legendary mastery of Pinot.

Drawing upon his unique skills and sure instincts, Henri Jayer chose these bottles himself. All are from his own production and carry within them the seeds of perfection.

Like the bottles offered at Baghera's "Henri Jayer, the Heritage" and despite being from Lydie Jayer's private cellar, all bottles in this collection have received the same treatment, meaning they were capped and labelled in 2018.

"This is a wonderful anniversary for us to celebrate, a reminder that just three years ago we held the world’s most important wine auction. Today, with bottles from the personal cellar of Henri Jayer's eldest daughter, Lydie Jayer, we are once again shining the spotlight on the know-how and mastery, as well as the incredible talent of both the long-established and new winegrowers of Burgundy. The ‘Burgundy Fields Forever’ sale is an ode to Burgundy and its artisans. This exceptional region gives rise to rare nectars and the trust demonstrated by its winegrowers enables us to make these vintages available to wine lovers and collectors around the world”, said Michael Ganne and Julie Carpentier, founders of Baghera/wines and auctioneers.
